We had a really nice weekend at the Columbia Kennel Club shows in Aiken SC!  Brew (Ch Akadia Killian's Irish Red CD) took Best of Breed both days and today went on to win a Group 4 under judge JD Jones.   It was so nice to visit with everyone and to see how well my handling class students did with their dogs. Lots of BOB's in our group, so I'm a proud cheerleader!

Conformation looks easy but, it requires handler skills and a trained dog to be successful in the ring at a dog show.  Of course, you need a dog that meets the standard for your breed as well.  That is how the dogs are judged.

The judge considers many things such as a dogs movement, coat (color, texture, etc.), ear set, eye shape, tail length, etc. depending on the standard for that breed.   Of course, a dog must be presented well and properly for a judge to be able to evaluate him/her.  You must "stack" your dog and "gait" him around the ring.  Most of the dogs you see on TV are shown by professional handlers.  But-- You can learn to show your own dog.

There are special classes at shows for Junior Handlers where the young person is competing against other young people in how well they present their dogs -- not which dog matches its standard best.

Nanette Johnson teaches a handling class to teach you how to train and present your dog in a conformation ring.

Cost: $6 per class

Yes, you can do both obedience and conformation at the same time ! ! !

Nanette moves and stacks Kaylani to earn Kaylani's second major in Charlotte.
