AimeeLove, Golden Retriever:

A Dog For All Seasons (Pet Therapy, Drama Therapy, Music Therapy, Baby Sitter for Seven Grandchildren

By Betsy Rollins

Martinez, Ga.

I grew up loving animals, especially dogs. However, I had never participated in pet therapy or obedience trialing until my husband and I, and our two Golden Retrievers, moved to Martinez, GA in 2000. It was through Marlene Stachowiak (a member of the Board of Therapy Dogs, Inc.) came to understand how one can help others by sharing a pet. She introduced me to Pet Therapy.

I enthusiastically enrolled in the Academy, operated by Marlene and her capable staff. We were soon visiting hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. In addition, we began work on AKC Obedience Trialing. AimeeLove had completed her AKC CDX title and was training for Utility, when her health failed her. She had served as a Therapy Dog for eight years, when she died on March 31, 2010.

One of our most memorable visits was made to the VA Medical Center. AimeeLove sat quietly beside a gentleman in a wheelchair. The nurse said the patient did not speak. However, as he stroked AimeeLove, he began whisper softly about the dog that he had when he was a child. The staff gathered around, amazed and appreciative.

Drama Therapy was also a part of her life. She starred as Sandy in the musical "Annie". She had a calming effect on the cast. The audience loved her, and she loved the applause. She followed this role with a larger one, as Horrid, the companion dog of King Pellinore (played by my husband) in the musical "Camelot". Music was a great interest to her.

She was always a faithful listener, lying, uncritically under my piano as I practiced. There were no wrong notes for her!

She was a serious babysitter. When any of our seven grandchildren were visiting, AimeeLove seemed to believe their welfare was dependent on her watchfulness. Her frequent sleeping was replaced with an alert movement of the eyes, following each child’s activity.

Our younger Golden, RoseMarie, now takes over the role of top dog in our family. She is also a Therapy dog, and is working toward her Grand Open title. To date, she has no stage experience, but she has shown a keen interest in listening to Bach. RoseMarie knows that she has some large paws to fill.

Whenever a loved one leaves us, we are reminded that life is short, that we do not have much time, and that we must be quick to love.

Dear Friends:

When we were asked to complete our evaluation of you in the Basic Obedience Course, I didn't feel I took the time to say everything I needed to say. This is written to more fully give "My Evaluation" of the initial 10-week Basic Obedience Course.

My intention was for additional socialization to compliment "Lucy's" work with the Therapy Dogs and learn more about basic obedience & good manners. I am very appreciative that you allowed us to attend, given her advanced age of 11 years. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks!

I was even more impressed with the depth of knowledge you have as instructors, and each "Story Time" portion of class was a lesson learned. Yes, I was one of those wonderful people who trimmed my dog's nails once a month & thought I was doing a good job. I hadn't spent a great deal of thought on basic first aid and given my dog's overall good demeanour, I didn't pay enough attention to what position a dog is standing/facing (body language toward other dogs) to know whether or not it was "threatening." Wow - do I have a lot to learn! I enjoyed this part of class and again, each "Story Time" was a valuable lesson.

One of the questions on the evaluation is "Would I recommend someone to Jae-Mar-S, and if so, why?"

Yes, I would recommend Jae-Mar-S -- and have done so -- without any reservation. I have been on your web site many times and I read everyone's qualifications and background. It doesn't do anyone justice to just "read" it. I was captivated to "listen" to what we were going to do with our dogs each evening, then "watch" one or the other "show" us with their dogs. Each instruction was concise and the atmosphere was very conducive to asking questions. Each "correction" I was given was taken as intended and made me more aware that I needed to pay more attention to myself and my dog. I needed to be aware of what I was "telling" my dog to do and what "information" I had given my dog. Not just expect my dog to be on "autopilot."

I also was impressed with how attentive every instructor was to each dog & the nature and temperament of each breed. You are constantly in a position of watching each dog, their owner, the size and age of the dogs -- y'all really have to be moving & watching all the time. I enjoyed watching the other dogs "learn" and found myself "cheering" for everyone's nightly success. It's not only a learning experience, it is fun! You made everyone feel comfortable as a group, but also took individual time with everyone in class.

I appreciate your invaluable experience and your ability to give your "people students" the confidence to try harder and be patient and consistent with your "canine students."

I look forward to working with you and knowing you better in years to come. Hopefully, Miss Lucy will be around long enough to need some "brush up" work!

Thank you for making this such a great experience.

Sincerely,

Ann J.
